Caring for Your Baby

Symptoms to report to your baby's doctor:

  • Blue or pale colored skin
  • Yellow skin or eyes
  • White patches in the baby's mouth
  • Loss of appetite or eating poorly
  • Less than 6 wet diapers per day or no stool in 48 hours
  • Umbilical cord has redness, drainage, or foul odor
  • Temperature of 100.4° or more
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Listlessness (lacks energy)
  • Excessive crying with no cause
  • Rash
  • Congested cough, runny eyes or nose

Taking your baby's temperature:

  • If taking your baby's temperature under the arm, remember to always add a degree.
  • If taking your baby's temperature rectally, remember to always subtract a degree. This is the preferred method if you are unsure the temperature reading was correct or if the temperature measured under the arm is above 100.4.
