Internal Medicine Residency Program Receives Grant

(Batesville, Ark.) — White River Health (WRHS) and the Internal Medicine Residency Program were recently granted a $2000 honorarium to host a ProudtobeGIM event for medical students and internal medicine residents from area programs and institutions. This funding is provided by the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and the American College of Physicians (ACP). WRHS was one of only 20 grantees across the United States to receive program funding for the 2019-2020 ProudtobeGIM grant cycle.

The ProudtobeGIM campaign was launched in 2015 by the Society of General Internal Medicine to expose medical students and residents to career opportunities in general internal medicine (GIM). The aim of the program is to inform students of the various career options in GIM and the multitude of opportunities to be a leader in patient care, research, health policy, and medical education. The campaign’s website (proudtobegim.org) features GIM career resources for students and medical educators, including multiple videos, podcasts, and information on mentoring programs. Since 2015, SGIM has proudly funded 60 medical institutions from across the US to host local events and educate young students and physicians about careers in GIM. For the second year in a row, the ACP has joined the ProudtobeGIM campaign and provided additional funding for institutions that applied in partnership with local ACP chapters.

WRHS and the Internal Medicine Residency Program will be hosting GIM.Possible a #ProudtobeGIM Event on February 22, 2020 to discuss the different career options within General Internal Medicine for medical students and residents across the state and region. The event will feature panels moderated by WRHS Internal Medicine Program Leadership, Dr. Khaled Khasawneh and Dr. Gilbert-Roy Kamoga. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to Class of 2021 Medical Students from area institutions. Residents and Medical Students from Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM), University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, New York Institute of Technology at Jonesboro, Unity Health in Searcy, St. Bernard’s and NEA Baptist in Jonesboro, Baptist Health in North Little Rock, and University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis will be attending. The event will be fully funded by WRHS so the honorarium may be used for two $1,000 scholarships.

WRHS is an accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program with the first class matriculating in June 2017. The program has a complete cohort of three classes with the first class of residents graduating in 2020. The program accepts 10 medical residents each year for a total of 30 residents during the three-year program.
